EDYN is outraged by the violent processes that took place in Georgia on July 5 and 6. In a state that seeks European Union membership, violent groups should not be able to physically assault minorities, peaceful citizens, and journalists.
The fact that 53 journalists were victims of violence while doing their job stands in contrast to European standards. This is further aggravated by the tragic death of one of the journalists, Lekso Lashkarava, for which we express our deep sorrow and share the pain of family members and loved ones of the deceased.
We call on the Georgian authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and deal with the perpetrators and their instigators in accordance with the law.
Everyone who was in any way connected to this violence must be must be held accountable to the Georgian people and relevant institutions.
